HIV-AIDS: Issues in Treatment, Stigma, and Policy Symposium

A statewide symposium, HIV-AIDS: Issues in Treatment, Stigma, and Policy, sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Law/Psychology Program, UNL Psychology Department and the Public Policy Center, was held April 22-24, 1999.

The symposium took an interdisciplinary approach to the investigation of three closely related issues: life-sustaining treatment for persons with HIV-AIDS; the stigma of HIV-AIDS; and public policies intended to live with-or be protected from acquiring-HIV-AIDS.

The symposium presented a variety of approaches that explore the ways in which the stigma associated with HIV has had an impact on public policy and access to treatment from the perspective of the biomedical, behavioral science, and legal professions, as well as more practical, experiential aspects of public policy. Topics included Medical and Social Perspectives on Adherence Issues; Using Law to Assist Persons with HIV-AIDS; Stigma: A Barrier to Successful Treatment and Policy Interventions; Special Populations and Problems; and Research and Policy.
