Project Inspire Youth

Project Inspire Youth (PIY) provides an innovative approach fostering healthy behaviors that lead to improved health outcomes by reducing childhood obesity. It aims to strengthen the Northeast Lincoln area with the potential to replicate the project in other high impact areas to reduce childhood obesity and increase personal belief of change health outcomes, by approaching a gap in health disparity by providing tools to empower children and families to positively impact their health. The Public Policy Center will be working in collaboration with community partners brought together to work on this pilot project: Huntington Elementary School Community Learning Center, Community Crops, Nebraska Wesleyan University students, and Aging Partners.

Project coordinators will work with fifth graders at Huntington Elementary to reduce childhood obesity with two interventions: the creation of a community garden and skills in container gardening. The Public Policy Center will develop both qualitative and quantitative measures to identify readiness for change and gather data on intent toward changing behavior.
