John-Michael Keyes, founder of the “i love u guys” Foundation, will speak about the tragic story of a violent school shooting in Colorado and its aftermath, and the work of the “i love u guys” Foundation, which aims to educate thousands of school administrators to train for, address, and respond to crisis situations.
This event is free and open to the public and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln community. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to capacity.
Co-sponsors include the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center and the following organizations from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Big Red Resilience and Well-Being, Center for Civic Engagement, College of Education and Human Sciences, LGBTQA Resource Center, the Women’s Center, and College of Arts and Sciences through the Thomas C. Sorensen Endowment.
John-Michael Keyes is an internationally sought-after speaker on school safety and school and community preparedness. With his wife Ellen-Stoddard Keyes, he founded the “i love u guys” Foundation in 2006, following a school shooting that took the life of their daughter, Emily. Today, the organization is led by survivors, family members, first responders, and community members with a vested interest in safety, preparedness, and reunification in schools.
Under John-Michael’s leadership, the Foundation has collaborated extensively with first responders, school districts, and other safety professionals to create specific and easy-to-implement protocols to train for, address, and respond to crisis situations. The resulting Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and the Standard Reunification Method (SRM) have been adopted by more than 25,000 schools, agencies, municipalities, and government organizations across the United States and Canada as well as within the Department of Defense International American Schools around the world.
