This presentation will provide the foundation and application skills needed to effectively perform Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with substance use disordered clients. The presentation will briefly review the DSM-5 substance use disorder diagnostic criteria, and assist counselors to know the different types and applications of CBT that focuses on cognitive restructuring, modifying behavior, and developing alternative coping skills.

CBT is an evidence-based counseling therapy often used in substance use treatment, both in individual and group counseling. CBT is a general classification of psychotherapy, based on social learning theory, which emphasizes how our thinking interacts with how we feel and what we do. A counselor using CBT helps a client to recognize their style of thinking and to modify it through the use of evidence and logic, which is especially true for clients with substance use issues and co-occurring disorders in the application of thinking errors and maladaptive behaviors.

An application has been made for 6.0 APA and Nebraska LADC continuing education hours.
