Lt. Governor Presents Proclamation Declaring September Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Nebraska

On Tuesday, September 6th, Nebraska Lt. Governor, Mike Foley, presented a proclamation to declare September National Suicide Prevention Month in Nebraska. Attendees of the event included American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - Nebraska Chapter field ambassador, Jennifer Sparrock and Quinn Lewandowski, who serves as president of the Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Coalition and is a senior research specialist at the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center, September is Suicide Awareness Month throughout the United States and National Suicide Prevention week is observed September 4-10. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, "on average, one person dies by suicide every 32 hours in Nebraska and suicide is the 13th leading cause of death in Nebraska, but the second leading cause of death among 10-44 year olds." Community action through education and awareness aims to break down the stigma associated with suicide and help reduce the number of suicides in Nebraska.
